The Shard- Quick facts 

  • The Shard London Bridge is 310 meters (1,017ft) tall.
  • It has become the tallest building in the EU and the 45th tallest in the world (Read more about the worlds tallest buildings). 
  • The Shard is the landmark building that forms part of the greater London Bridge Quarter redevelopment project (learn more about London Bridge Quater).
  • There will be a total of 82 floors in the skyscraper but only 72 will be habitable. 
  • The Shard was designed in 2000, by Renzo Piano (See more of Renzo Piano's work).
  • Construction started in May 2009 and the external completion was marked in July 2012, just in time for the London Olympics.
  • The Shard will be open to the public with a viewing gallery and observation deck on the 72nd floor. This become the highest public area in London and will therefore offer by far the best views of the city. 
  • The viewing gallery for The Shard opened in February 2013
